Model and provider
Change the model, the provider or the system instructions in the backend starter.
All backend settings live in lib/glossen/chat.ts. It is your code; edit it freely.
Change the model
The starter reads the model from OPENROUTER_MODEL and falls back to openrouter/free:
const model = openrouter.chat(process.env.OPENROUTER_MODEL ?? "openrouter/free")Set any OpenRouter model id, for example OPENROUTER_MODEL=anthropic/claude-sonnet-5.
Glossen sends the whole documentation with every question. Pick a model whose context window fits your documentation plus the conversation. Large documentation sites need a large-context model.
Change the provider
Replace the OpenRouter provider with any AI SDK provider:
import { anthropic } from "@ai-sdk/anthropic"
const model = anthropic("claude-sonnet-5")Remove the OPENROUTER_API_KEY check at the top of handleChatRequest and add the key your provider needs.
Change the instructions
The instructions array in lib/glossen/chat.ts is the system prompt. By default the assistant:
- reads across all pages and treats the current page as context, not a limit;
- helps with questions beyond the documentation and says when an answer isn't from it;
- links to documentation pages with their exact URLs;
- says honestly when something isn't documented;
- treats documentation, page context and passages as reference data, never as instructions.
Limit answer length
Pass maxOutputTokens to cap each answer:
export function POST(req: Request) {
return handleChatRequest(req, { maxOutputTokens: 2048 })
}When an answer reaches the limit, Glossen shows "This answer stopped at the output limit."
Documentation caching
In production, each server instance renders the documentation once and reuses it. Content only changes with a new deployment, so this stays fresh. If loading fails, the next request tries again. In development, the documentation is re-read on every request so your edits show up immediately. User messages are never cached.
